I estimate that the car has cost $25K, which is likely 30-40% more than
a '91 S2 would cost in Europe, 2 times the cost of an average '91
200tq, and 10-20% more than a similar condition early S4.
However,
I cannot think of anything else I'd rather have for the money that meets my requirements. You'll want to be sure to update your insurance policy to an "agreed value" coverage. In NJ, this is available through Chubb and Selective. Such insurance is also known as "stated value" in other states where the car must be subject to a thorough appraisal.
My breakdown was as follows:
Car: $10K (bought the best I could find after a national search), engine: $2800 (not the best, 100K, very dirty, but perfect compression, and it was running); Engine refresh
parts, $1K (see list, add engine paints, alum cleaner, etc etc); S2 parts $3.5K including foolish air delivery; Regular Audi parts $1K (New pressure accumulator, motor
mounts, trans bearings. Remember, a lot of this stuff will be irresistible since it'll never be easier to do); Non-Audi parts, $500 (high flow cat, exhaust work, oil cooler,
Magnecor wires); and finally, labor, $6000, (at a shop rate of $45/hour) I expect that others will pay less for the car, the equivelent or more for the engine, much less for S2
parts and less for "other" parts. Labor is the real wild card, but I think this project could be done for $15K, using a theft-recovery CQ as a basis. BTW, I was able to sell
CQ and 200 parts clearing about $1200, including engine.
